Roles
The Music Man
"Professor" Harold Hill is a con man whose scam is to convince parents he can teach their musicallydisinclined children to play musical instruments. Taking pre-paid orders for instruments and uniforms with the promise he will form a band, he skips town and moves on to the next one before he's exposed. Arriving in fictional 1912 River City, Iowa, Hill finds his modus operandus compromised when he becomes attracted to a local librarian, Marian Paroo, who recognizes him for the fraud he is. Nevertheless, she falls in love with the smooth-talking charmer when he draws her self-conscious, lisping brother Winthrop from his shell. When Hill's scheme begins to unravel, he is faced with the choice of escaping yet again or staying with Marian and facing the consequences. He chooses to stay, and is rewarded with unanticipated redemption: uncritical parents marvel and cheer as Hill's newly organized Boy's Band performs, and the characters live happily ever after.
Audition Procedures and Requirements
Must be age 8 or above to audition; Roles available for Pre-Teen through Senior Adults
Monday, March 24—Vocal Auditions
Those auditioning for major roles are encouraged to prepare to perform approximately two (2) minutes from a song in the style of the show. Sing songs in similar style to the character’s songs, which can be “acted” and not just “sung.” Bring sheet music in an appropriate key for your audition song. Accompanist will be provided. If you do not wish to sing a prepared song, you will be asked to sing a chorus of a familiar tune.
In addition to major and supporting roles, "The Music Man" incorporates a large chorus. If you wish to be considered primarily for chorus, you may bring a prepared audition piece or simply sing a chorus of a familiar tune such as “Happy Birthday” either individually or in a small group.
Monday, March 24—Acting Auditions
Men and women will be paired to read selected portions from the script. Readers should be familiar with the various roles and the show’s plot. Be prepared to read for a part which you may not have considered. Project your voice to be heard and avoid “burying” your head in the script. A slight amount of movement is encouraged if that helps you interpret the role for which you are reading. Let the directors know you understand the character.
Tuesday, March 25—Dance Auditions for all Cast Members (including those auditioning for Dancing Chorus only)
The choreographer seeks people who move easily and well, displaying a comfort level with basic coordination and rhythmic patterns. Wear appropriate dance clothing. Have an eager attitude and be willing to project. Ballet combinations and partner work for men and women will be given depending upon desired roles. There will be an opportunity for both men and women to perform “tricks” (gymnastics, specialty jumps and turns, etc.). Additional singing or reading may be requested following dance auditions.
>People interested ONLY in the dancing chorus need attend only the Tuesday, March 25, audition and must be prepared to sing one chorus of "Happy Birthday".Thursday, March 27—Callbacks
